38 Days Until the Vote

Wanyi dove faster than he could think, pinning his wings to his body and picking up speed. Tong flew just behind him. If the hawk could get close enough to Meisun, she could potentially reinstate the bond and catch herself. But the odds of her being able to focus on something like that while the streets rushed up to meet her were slim.

Wind battered Wanyi’s face, stinging his eyes. Meisun was still too far below him, the hem of her robe fluttering up near her face, her long braids streaming behind and above her. She flailed her arms and legs, probably in an attempt to slow her fall, but to no avail. She looked terrified. He could not fail.

He opened his wings just enough to bank around to his left. It widened the gap between himself and Meisun, but he wouldn’t be able to catch her from directly above her. He needed to circle around and come in from the side to slow their momentum. He reentered his dive, begging the Creator to give him speed.

Meisun let out another scream as he circled away, and didn’t stop once he spun back around. Wanyi tried to gauge the distance between her and the ground. He had managed to close the height gap between himself and Meisun, but they would soon be level with the rooftops. From there, they’d have only a moment before the stone streets rose up to shatter their bones.

He would only have one chance.
